The game gives you the ability to start with a crew and play through the entire game together, regardless of race or class. Want to make a go at it solo? Then take on quests alone. The higher level dungeons and raids demand teamwork, but with its stellar Looking for Group system, finding people to tackle a hard boss has never been easier. It’s always worth mentioning the warring factions of the alliance and horde. Because not only does Irrational Games’ spiritual successor to the wonderful System Shock 2 have us exploring the crumbling underwater world of Rapture, taking on its unhinged and hostile inhabitants, and injecting ourselves with copious amounts of DNA-altering drugs; it also forces us to choose whether or not we want to harvest the souls of innocent children. That might sound like a no-brainer, but if you’re to have any sort of chance of overcoming the Little Sisters’ hulking, near-impenetrable Big Daddy minders, the power these little ‘uns yield once consumed could come in handy. First-person shooters don’t come much more thought-provoking than BioShock, and few have come as close since.
Developed to appeal to female players, a huge demographic that contributed to the frenzied success of the original game, Ms. Pac-Man isn’t just one of the first women to lead an arcade hit, but is widely appreciated as superior to her puck-shaped male counterpart. -A.B.
